Nowadays the energy production and consumption is changing. The availability of fuel will be inevitably transferred to the energy final price. The environmental regulations will also demand its toll. On the other hand, the consumers will be able to contribute to the electricity production by renewable sources like photovoltaic panels and wind turbines, and electrical cars will be able to give energy back to the network during peak hours.
In this context, the concept of Smart Grid arises, which combines the intelligent measurement and negotiation, allows the interaction between the producers and millions of consumers for the system global optimization and opens the opportunity of new value-added services. On the other hand, most telco operators are evolving towards Next Generation Networks (NGN), where all the information of the distinct services (voice, data, multimedia…) are transported by one integrated network and traffic engineering is employed to guarantee the requirements of each one.
The Multimedia IP Subsystem (IMS) protocols of the NGN control plane are highly scalable, provide security and protection against errors mechanisms, and are designed to support intense traffic signaling with peak episodes, such as the Smart Grid traffic. This project proposes the study and adaptation of IMS protocols to integrate Smart Grid traffic into the telco network as another IMS service together with the conventional ones. This produces a mutual benefit situation for network operators and electrical companies because of the improvement of the infrastructure investment returns for the formers and the immediate access to a reliable ubiquitous and highly scalable network for the latters.
